State Highway 3 through the Awakino Gorge is currently down to one lane due to a dropout just south of SH3 Kuriwera Bridge and Awakau Road intersection.
The drop out is adjacent to the Awakino River and has affected the guard rail on the roadside and reduced the shoulder width.
For the safety of motorists, SH3 has been reduced to one lane under Stop/Go traffic management, with traffic lights in place.
A geotechnical assessment of the site will be undertaken as soon as possible.
Taranaki’s roading network has been hit hard by the recent severe weather with slips, drop outs and flooding in a number of locations. Crews are closely monitoring the network to ensure the safety of all road users.
People are encouraged to take extra care, watch for hazards on the road, adjust their speed for the environment, and plan for delays to their journeys.
Waka Kotahi thanks everyone for their patience and will provide further updates over the coming days.
