A recent crash off the Nayland Road overbridge means that the pedestrian railing needs to be permanently repaired, says Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Nelson City Council.
Three nights of work with a full state highway closure on Whakatu Drive, SH6, start this Sunday night.
While Nelson City Council manages Nayland Road which includes the overbridge, Waka Kotahi manages SH6 beneath it.
In order to do the work safely, for both road users, pedestrians and the workers on site, there needs to be no traffic on Whakatu Drive below the Nayland overpass. Nayland Road will remain open, apart from the footpath area on the affected, western side.

Three nights of closures are needed for these repairs from 8 pm to 5 am each morning, 12-14 June. The three nights are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with the work ending at 5 am Wednesday morning, 15 June. Sunday, 19 June, is an extra night which may be used if the work takes longer than three nights.
SH6 Whakatu Drive will be closed between Annesbrook Roundabout and the Salisbury Link Road/Raeward Roundabout, in Richmond.
“While the closure is in place other maintenance works including pavement repairs, and vegetation management will be undertaken on Whakatu Drive/ SH6,” says Andrew James, System Manager for Waka Kotahi Top of the South.
The night-time closures will affect the smallest numbers of road users. Detour routes are available for all vehicles along Main Road Stoke and access to the airport will be maintained throughout. (See maps)
Temporary speed restrictions will be in place and traffic management staff will control traffic around detours.
