UPDATE 9.55am Wed 14 April: State Highway 35 has now reopened between Okitu, near Gisborne, and Tolaga Bay. Contractors are out clearing the road but people are advised to travel carefully, expect the unexpected and remain alert for unreported hazards.

9:38am: State Highway 38 has reopened after it was closed last night due to flooding brought about by heavy rain from Cyclone Fili.

State Highway 35 remains closed between Okitu, east of Gisborne and Potaka due to flooding, slips and downed trees. An update on the road is expected later today.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency National Journey Manager Helen Harris says contractors are out clearing the roads after last night’s wild weather, but asks people traveling to remain alert for unreported hazards.

“Stay alert for unreported hazards, such as surface flooding, slips, fallen trees and branches, and downed powerlines.

“Slow down and maintain a greater following distance between your vehicle and the one in front.”

People should also be mindful of contractors who could be out clearing hazards off the road, and drive slowly through work sites, Ms Harris says.

“We want to see everyone get home safely.”
