Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is closing northbound lanes on a section of State Highway 1 (SH1) in the central motorway junction this Easter to replace a damaged section of bridge joint.

All northbound lanes will be closed at night between the Wellesley Street off-ramp (exit 429) and the State Highway 16 link on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 April.

During the day on Friday 15 April the left northbound lane will remain open, allowing access north on SH1 and to the Nelson Street off-ramp.

Victoria Park Tunnel will remain open throughout the closure.

Signposted detours will be in place, via Wellesley Street to State Highway 16 westbound, SH1 northbound and the CBD.

Motorists are advised to take the western ring route to avoid congestion, which is expected to be significant during peak traffic times.

The damaged joint does not pose an immediate safety risk but it is showing signs of distress. Replacing the joint in a continuous closure is safer and less disruptive to road users than carrying out further temporary repairs.

Details of the closure are as follows:

Overnight:

  • Thursday 14 April, 10.30pm to 7am
  • Friday 15 April, 9pm to 7am

SH1 will be closed northbound from exit 429  to the State Highway 16 on-ramp. Signposted detours will be in place via Wellesley Street to State Highway 16 westbound, SH1 northbound and the CBD.

During the day:

  • Friday 15 April, 7am to 8pm
  • Two northbound lanes will be closed before Nelson Street off-ramp. One lane will remain open.

The closure may need to be extended to 7am on Sunday 17 April and may be delayed by bad weather.
