Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is closing northbound lanes on a section of State Highway 1 (SH1) before the Nelson Street off-ramp from Thursday 14 to Saturday 16 April to replace a damaged section of bridge joint.

The damage was identified through routine inspection as part of our maintenance programme. Regular monitoring enables a quick response to ensure the safe and reliable operation of this critical section of the network.

The damaged joint does not pose an immediate safety risk but it is showing signs of distress.

Replacing the joint in a continuous closure is safer and less disruptive to road users than carrying out further temporary repairs. The failing section of the bridge joint straddles lanes 2 and 3, so two lanes must remain closed during the day.

  • The closure will begin at 10:30pm on Thursday 14 April and finish at 7:00am on Saturday 16 April
  • During the night, SH1 northbound will be closed between Symonds Street and the SH16 link. Please follow the signposted detour.
  • During the day, one lane will remain open, allowing access north on SH1 and to the Nelson Street off-ramp. Victoria Park Tunnel will remain open throughout the works.
  • The closure may need to be extended to 7am on Sunday 17 April.

Road users are advised to take the western ring route to avoid congestion, which is expected to be significant during peak traffic times.

Signposted detours will be in place, via Wellesley Street to State Highway 16 westbound, SH1 northbound and the CBD.
