Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will begin work shortly to help make State Highway 2 in the Hawke’s Bay safer by extending a slow vehicle bay at Waikoau Hill, south of Lake Tūtira.

From Monday 4 April, contractors will be excavating the steep hillside above the existing slow vehicle bay, benching the hillside and resurfacing to extend the slow vehicle bay to 360 metres.

The slow vehicle bay extension will help improve safety by reducing driver frustration and are part of a wider project that aims to provide more safe places to pass slow vehicles and more places to pull off the road to check messages or take a break on state highways 2 and 35.

Between 7:00am and 7:00pm Monday to Saturday, temporary speed reductions and Stop/Go traffic management will be in place, and delays of up to five minutes are expected. After 7:00pm, the shoulder will remain closed and a reduced speed limit of 50-70km/h will be in place.

The project will run from April until the end of May, before stopping for winter. Work will recommence in September and continue until December.

Waka Kotahi thanks road users for their patience while we improve this section of SH2.
