Originally from Russia, she lived in the city of Irpin with her Ukrainian husband and children until the conflict broke out. The family hid in a basement for three days before they were able to escape through the help of a friend and make it to the Romanian border, however her husband stayed behind in Ukraine.
Alina is aiming to reach some extended family who live in Spain but is unsure how long the journey might take and what the process is to obtain a visa. For now, the family are staying in temporary accommodation for refugees in Romania where the children have been using the child friendly space run by Save the Children. Alina says her sons have especially enjoyed playing games there, which makes her happy despite what they have been through.
Save the Children is on the ground in Ukraine and neighbouring countries across Eastern Europe where families have fled providing life-saving food, clean water, shelter, and mental health support.
Our humanitarian aid includes supporting access to education, providing psychosocial support, distributing winter and hygiene kits, and providing cash grants to families so they can meet basic needs like food, rent and medicines or invest in starting a new business. Our specialist teams provide children with access to safe, inclusive, quality education. Working with schools and community centres, we help support children to overcome the mental and psychological impacts of their experiences of conflict and violence and increase their ability to cope with stress in their daily lives.
