London – A huge number of Brits say they are considering buying vegan food for their cats and dogs.
New Zealanders have not been surveyed but they are among the world leaders in pet ownership. Cats are the most popular pets with 44 percent of New Zealand homes having a moggie. Just over a quarter of Kiwis (28 percent) own dogs.
A total of 64 percent of Kiwi households own at least one pet, just a smidge behind the USA (65%).
But back in the UK, a new UK Vegan Society report released this week looked at growing consumer interest around vegan food and other products for dogs and cats.
The UK Pet Food Manufactures Association estimates that in 2021, almost 60 percent (59 percent) of UK households shared their home with a companion animal with 33 percent living with a cat or cats, and 27 percent living with one dog or more.
Interestingly, 20 percent of those with UK cats said they had purchased vegan cat food in the past with 14 percent saying that they believed their cat was enjoying it.
Almost half said that they would be interested in purchasing vegan cat food and of these, 32 percent said they would buy it as long as it was healthy and suitable for their cat, and 17 percent said they would consider it as long as it was cost comparative.
Meanwhile, 1 in 4 of those with dogs said they had purchased vegan dog food previously, with 16 percent of those declaring the dog enjoyed it.
On top of this, 45 percent of those living with dogs said that they were interested in vegan food for their companion-animal. And from these, 32 percent said they would buy it as long as it was healthy, and 13 percent said as long as it was cost comparative.
