We are proud to be helping the Western Bay of Plenty become a safer destination through our work along the State Highway 2 (SH2) corridor.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Bay of Plenty System Manager, Roger Brady says there is a lot going on between Waihī and Tauranga, with a great deal already completed.
“We are investing more than $800m in SH2 to save lives and create better journeys for all,” he says.
“The construction contract for Takitimu North Link Stage One was awarded in December and earthworks are well underway, the project will improve safety while supporting growth and providing transport choice. We will be holding localised drop-in sessions to keep the community informed as the project ramps up.
“The Waihī to Ōmokoroa safety improvements project continues to make good progress with 5 of 10 sections completed. This includes road widening, wide centreline for increased traffic separation, intersection improvements and the recent announcement of a median barrier to be installed between Tetley Road and Esdaile Road.
“The maintenance team made the most of the warm summer weather and completed an intensive resealing programme along the corridor.
“We are also working alongside Western Bay of Plenty District Council (WBOPDC) to develop a shared path, which is in the design stage for Wharawhara Road to Henry Road, to help people move safely and enjoyably along here.”
This is what you can expect to see on your journey between Waihī and Tauranga this week:
Ongoing safety improvement works (between 7am-6pm). Expect minor delays of one to two minutes at most sites.
- Athenree Road to Tanners Point Road – road widening works continue throughout the week.
- Hikurangi Road to Tuapiro Road – lane shifts for retaining wall construction.
- Rea Road / Tetley Road intersection – roundabout construction underway, expect major layout changes in the area. Tetley Road is temporarily closed between SH2 and Rereatukahia Pā Road, detour routes are available, follow the signs. Please pay attention to temporary traffic management signage (the orange backed signs) and watch the orange road cones, which are there to help direct you away from hazards and separate traffic from road construction activities.
- Lund Road to Aongatete Road – road widening, earthworks, drainage barrier installation and service relocation works.
- Wainui River Bridge to south of Sargent Drive – works continue on the side road and alongside SH2.
- Takitimu North Link enabling works, ecological and environmental investigations continuing
- Minden Road – Service relocations and tree felling taking place, a Stop/Go will be in place from for three weeks (with Stop/Stop for tree felling).
- Cambridge/Harrison Roads – Service relocations requiring a hydrovac truck will be in progress and a shoulder closure in place. There may be a requirement for Stop/Go. This work will be completed over a few days.
- Wairoa Road – Stop/Go in place for service relocations and trucks crossing.
In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, works may be postponed.
