Speaker of the House Rt Hon Trevor Mallard has continued the virtual Inter-Parliamentary Relations programme in 2022.
Most recently, he has held a successful call with Li Zhanshu, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, and earlier in February 2022 with Czech Speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová.
“I am pleased to have had the opportunity to (virtually) continue the Inter-Parliamentary relations programme. Since late January 2021 I have also held calls with Scotland, the United Kingdom, Australia, the California Senate President pro Tempore, the Canadian House and Senate, Lithuania, New South Wales, Australia, and Iceland.”
The virtual programme is an important way that Parliament can stay connected with the international community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. These ongoing engagements are part of Speaker-led diplomacy with countries around the world, as part of the IPR Strategy for the 53rd Parliament.
