Waka Kotahi is advising drivers to allow at least an extra 45 minutes for journeys between Featherston and Martinborough on SH53, with a detour in place around the Waihenga Bridge, which remains closed following this weekend’s flooding.
Due to the exceptionally heavy rain, the river has swollen to record levels, and the bridge will remain closed until the water recedes to a safe level. The bridge is expected to remain closed until mid-week.
Drivers are advised to use the current detour route in place, follow signs and allow at least an extra 45 minutes to travel times.
For Martinborough-bound traffic, drivers should:
- turn right onto Western Lake Rd
- turn left onto East-West Access Rd
- turn right onto Kahutara Rd
- turn left onto Lake Ferry Rd
- continue on back onto SH53 to Martinborough.
The reverse route is in place for Featherston bound traffic.
Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
