NorthTec and the NZ institute of Builders (NZIOB) have shifted to an online celebration for their 19th Annual NorthTec Student Awards to recognise 9 outstanding students in construction and engineering trades.
The Northern Branch, Northland Chapter of the NZIOB and NorthTec jointly founded and fund an Annual NorthTec Student Awards event. Each year, prizes of prizes are awarded to the top NorthTec students across a variety of categories in the construction and engineering trades.
This year is the 19th year of awards, the first being held in 2003. However, instead of the annual awards night, the event has been moved to an online platform due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Trevor Griffiths, NZIOB’s Northland Branch Committee Chair says, “It’s been a really weird 18 months or so for us all, it’s heartening to see the event carrying on, albeit in a different manner. Each year this event has grown in strength and at the last event we again had more than 100 people attend. As with any event, sponsors play a significant role, and this year was no exception. Even through Covid-19 sponsors have stuck by the event.”
Funding for the awards is provided by a committed group of industry sponsors. Their valued support helps promote and celebrate those NorthTec students who excel in their chosen field and stand out as rising prospects for Northland’s trades industries.
“As the industry grows and as the demand for resources increases these awards are due to become more career defining and absolutely beneficial to industry,” says Griffiths. “From the NZIOB perspective, our relationship with NorthTec is of the upmost importance and as such we see the relationship becoming stronger and stronger as they continue to lead the way in built environment education.”
“As always we are really proud of our students who have shone through during this challenging year!” Sam Kelly, Manager of construction at NorthTec says. “Several of our winners have already secured employment or an apprenticeship within the sector. It’s great to see local employers recognising and supporting local talent who are just starting out in the industry. It would have been fantastic to have held the awards in person, as this would have been our biggest awards ceremony to date due to the growth in our trades programmes and strong relationship with NZIOB.”
NorthTec and NZIOB would like to congratulate every one of the 9 students who were recognised in these awards as well as the nominees. Richard Hunia (Construction L3 Award- Regional), Regan Edwards (Construction L3 Award -Whangarei), Quinn Kusanic (Construction L4 Award), Sharon Shen (Painting Award), Cody Freeman (Electrical Engineering Award), Hamish Morgan (Civil Engineering Award), Nicole Vuletich and Tracey Ho (Architectural Technology Award – joint awardees), and Ruth Abraham (Project Management Award).
