Auckland Council will consult Aucklanders on aspects of the government’s Three Waters Reform proposal, to ensure the region’s views are represented on the formation of the proposed new upper North Island water entity.

Consultation will open at 9am on Friday 3 December and run until 11.59pm on Sunday 19 December.

More details on the consultation will be released in the coming week, including Have Your Say opportunities and how to sign up for information webinars . Information and an online submission form will be available at akhaveyoursay.nz

In October 2021 the Government announced its proposal to reform New Zealand’s water sector. This included confirming that it will legislate for four publicly owned water entities to provide drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services. This reform will be mandatory for all councils across New Zealand.

“In September, the council’s Governing Body agreed to consult with Aucklanders on the government’s proposal. The subsequent government decision to mandate the reform process has required us to consider consultation somewhat differently, however the principle of involving Aucklanders in the council’s approach still stands,” says Mayor Goff.

“Aucklanders will be able to give their feedback on the council’s views on the governance, representative and accountability arrangements of the proposed entities. We will also be undertaking independent research to support the consultation.

“Auckland Council made a commitment to consult with the people we represent, to ensure that that we are accurately reflecting the views of our constituents in the position we put forward to government,” he says

This feedback will be used to inform Auckland Council’s input, through Mayor Goff, into the working group that is charged with working through the proposed governance, representation and accountability arrangements.
