A group of 17 secondary school students made a visit to Massey’s Manawatū campus last month to gain insight into what university life might look like for them as a student athlete.

The visit was part of the Hurricanes Under-18 Development Camp, a yearly event with the purpose of accelerating the development of an identified player and getting them into a high-performance environment.

Student recruitment advisor Tania Jahnke, who hosted those players with a desire to study at Massey, says the visit gave students valuable insight into what to expect when they transition to university.

“Players gained key insights on transitioning from high school to university, the opportunities available at university and what to expect from the many aspects of university life.”

As part of their visit, the players had a conversation with School of Health Sciences senior lecturer Dr Bevan Erueti, who spoke with them about balancing study and other commitments. The students saw concourse, the university library, the dining hall, the main bus terminal which offers free student transport and the inside of a lecture theatre.

Manawatū Rugby Union player development manager Eneliko Fa’atau says the athletes took away good learnings from the day. “We had some really cool conversations about student life and the processes that come with it, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen the relationship between Massey University, Manawatū Rugby and the Hurricanes.”

Feilding High School’s Vernon Bason says it was a great experience for him. “What I found most interesting was the relationship and professionalism Massey has with a lot of elite athletes already, and how they are able to help them balance their study and professional life.”

Fourteen secondary schools and three rugby clubs from the Hurricanes region were represented on the day.
