Aucklanders will soon be asked to share their views on carparking in Tāmaki Makaurau and how it is managed in the future.
The discussion will be the first of a two-staged public consultation process that will underpin the review Auckland Transport’s (AT) parking strategy last updated in 2015.
The council’s Planning Committee has given approval for the review to start by way of a discussion document to ensure Aucklanders views guide and inform the strategy’s development from the outset.
The document will set out the principles and processes for development of the parking strategy, along with relevant legislative changes and context of issues and challenges including a climate emergency, congestion, and population growth.
AT plans to release the initial discussion document for public feedback later this month.
Auckland Council’s Planning Committee Chair Chris Darby says Aucklanders should make the most of this opportunity to influence parking and how it is managed.
“Parking affects everyone – whether you own a car or not. The discussion document is the first opportunity for our region to talk through how we use our road space in a way that is fit for the future, as well as the many opportunities this presents.
“We will use what we learn from this feedback to develop the draft strategy which will then go back out to Aucklanders for a formal consultation process next year,” says Councillor Darby.
AT’s Executive General Manager of Planning and Investment, Jenny Chetwynd, says it’s important to engage extensively with communities in developing a new strategy.
“The review will challenge many things we take for granted and it’s important we have a deliberate conversation about that as a city.”
“This is the start of the conversation with the community about how to use the public land that we call ‘road reserve’, and in particular, how we choose to manage its use for private vehicle storage and parking. Essentially, we need to choose between a future that has continued congestion, or good, mobility for all users and modes.”
The discussion document will be available later this month for Aucklanders to provide feedback.
