Ahead of what will hopefully be the last weekend at Alert Level 3 Step 1 for Aucklanders, Auckland Council is preparing more of its facilities for a new set of eased restrictions.

If the government confirms a shift into Alert Level 3 Step 2 for Tāmaki Makaurau on Monday afternoon, facilities like libraries and museums can open to the public once again.

But this doesn’t mean all Auckland Council facilities will be ready to go first thing Wednesday morning, and many places like libraries, art galleries and service centres may likely have a phased reopening.

Councillor Alf Filipaina, Chair of the Parks, Arts, Community and Events Committee, reminds Aucklanders that the region is still under restrictions.

“The new step is still Alert Level 3, not alert level free. We need to continue to stick to the rules to keep ourselves, our whānau/’aiga (families) and our communities safe.”

He says that council staff are working hard to bring back the services that Aucklanders enjoy and rely on.

“Aucklanders have missed our libraries and art galleries, and the popularity of the contactless click and collect service highlights that.

“We’re looking at opening these facilities soon but have a number of things to work through, including making sure we’ve got everything in place to protect the health and safety of our customers and our people,” he says.

More information about the staged reopening of our facilities and how they will operate will be available on the Auckland Council website after the government confirms the region’s step down in restrictions.

Cr Filipaina also reminds people to get vaccinated in preparation for summer.

“The vaccination is the best protection for us, our whānau and ‘aiga as well as our communities, especially those around us who are vulnerable like our disabled whānau. It is the best way to show aroha to everyone around us.”

He asks Aucklanders to continue to be patient, safe and kind this weekend, ahead of the anticipated move to Alert Level 3 step 2.
