Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists in the Hawke’s Bay to take extra care and stay alert as severe weather is creating challenging driving conditions.

National Journey Manager Helen Harris says Waka Kotahi is monitoring the situation in Hawke’s Bay closely.

“Crews have been out responding to incidents across the state highway network, including slips and fallen trees,” says Ms Harris.

“State Highway 2 and State Highway 5 currently remain open, but the weather is making driving a challenge. People travelling on these roads need to take extra care and expect the unexpected.

“Potholes and debris have appeared on roads across the region, so please keep speeds down and stay alert. We want everyone to get to their destinations and back home safely.

“Our current focus is on trying to keep the roads open for people who need to travel. Our contractors have been very busy responding to incidents and making sure the roads are clear of fallen trees and branches.

“That means it will take some time for us to repair the potholes, especially as the severe weather is expected to continue into the weekend. We need people to drive to the conditions for the safety of everyone on the roads, including our contractors who are doing a great job in very bad weather.

“If anyone sees any issues on the state highways, please call 0800 44 44 49 so that our contractors can get to the site quickly and fix the issue.”

Waka Kotahi will advise of any road closures on our social media pages or the Journey Planner webpage. Motorists who do need to travel are advised to check these before heading out, as well as the MetService website for the weather forecast.
