Work on the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway will see traffic detoured along the old state highway on the nights of Sunday 31 October and Monday 1 November.

A variety of work, including safety barrier, lighting, sign and drainage maintenance, as well as litter control, road investigations and structure inspections, will be carried out while all south-bound traffic is detoured via Cambridge town on the Sunday. The following night all north-bound traffic will be on the same detour.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Regional Manager Infrastructure Delivery Jo Wilton says it is quicker and safer to do all this without traffic on the highway.

“The safety of road users and our road workers is the highest priority for Waka Kotahi, and closing the road while we undertake this work makes it easier to keep everyone safe.”

The detour is not suitable for over-dimension vehicles.

In the event of poor weather, the work will be shifted to the nights of Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 November. Detour hours are 7pm-6am.

Work is dependent on the area remaining at COVID-19 Alert Level 3 or less.

The 16km Cambridge section of the expressway opened to traffic in December 2015, greatly improving safety and journey times on State Highway 1 south of Hamilton.
