“Work is now ramping up significantly in the lead-in to the summer holidays, so we thank all drivers and road users for their patience using the detour routes and slowing around crews and other road users,” says Emma Speight, Director Regional Relationships for Waka Kotahi.

“This work and the new detours start in the second week of the school holidays and we are aiming to progress as much as we can before the Christmas shut-down.”

From this Sunday, 10 October, work will start on installing the pedestrian signals at the existing zebra crossing on High Street, north of Wallace Street, and the right-hand turn lane into Wallace Street.

It will involve road closures for Wallace Street during the day and night, and a night-time road closure for a section of High Street. Detours will be in place.

Wallace Street, Motueka – day and night road closure

For around five weeks from Monday 11 October, the entry off High Street into Wallace Street will be closed, with a detour in place. People will need to use the detour around Greenwood, Wilkinson and Tudor Streets. High Street will remain open during the day.

High Street, Motueka – night road closure

From Sunday 10 October, a section of High Street will be closed during the night from the Greenwood, Pah and High Streets intersection to the Tudor and High Streets intersection.

This night-time road closure will be for two weeks, with crews on the job between 6pm and 4am from Sunday through to Thursday nights.

The following detours will be in place:

  • Normal ‘light’ vehicles can use the above detour for the Wallace Street closure (around Greenwood, Wilkinson and Tudor Streets.)
  • Heavier vehicles/ trucks must use a longer diversion through Pah, Queen Victoria and King Edward Streets.

Roundabout – Old Wharf Road/King Edward Street/High Street intersection

Construction on the Old Wharf Road, King Edward Street and High Street roundabout is going well, with stage one on track to be completed by Monday 18 October. Once this stage is completed, Old Wharf Road will be reopened.

On Monday 18 October, crews will move onto stage two of the roundabout construction, working on the northwest corner of the intersection in front of the Clock Tower.

Waka Kotahi is still on track to start stage 3 in early November, which involves work on the southwestern corner in front of the Department of Conservation building.

There will be no road closures or detours during the day at this intersection while we construct stage two and stage three of the roundabout.
