Recreational walking in Albany took another step forward with Upper Harbour Local Board approving the path design and construction for Fernhill Escarpment Reserve.
Fernhill Escarpment Reserve is a significant ecological area situated near Massey University and the Albany shopping centre.
Chair Lisa Whyte says walking and cycling networks are a priority for the local board and the reserve’s central location and position next to other reserves is ideal for an off-road path network.
“Now even more than ever, we enjoy getting outdoors and this reserve with its very old Totara trees and protected status is very special to our community.
“This project has been several years in the planning, involved a strategic assessment and consultation with multiple stakeholders, so it’s wonderful to approve the final design and to know, all going well, that procurement followed by construction is expected to start shortly.”
The work includes:
- upgrading the main walking track on the northern side of the stream
- installing a pedestrian bridge at the eastern end of Northwood Reserve
- decommissioning several tracks
- installing wayfinding signage.
The local board has allocated $682,000 for the work which is expected to take several months and once complete, will provide better links to other parks including to Brookfield and Northwood reserves.
