This year, Education Perfect will once again run its Free online Whakataetae Reo Māori (Māori Language Competition) which is the largest competition in Aotearoa celebrating the practice and inclusion of Māori language.

With more than 1000 schools already currently registered for this year’s competition, EP has launched two additional competitions: an inaugural one focused on NZ business professionals and organisations, and the other for all New Zealanders wherever they might be in their te reo journey.

EP’s first online Whakataetae Reo Māori (Māori Language Competition) for New Zealand schools was launched in September 2018 during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), an annual nationwide week of celebrations, dedicated to the use and promotion of New Zealand’s indigenous language.

The competition has grown in popularity, and by 2020, over 400 schools were participating, with thousands of students answering over 5 million questions. The three-day online competition, run on the Education Perfect platform, covers Māori language and cultural concepts, and this year is expected to be bigger and better.

During Te Wiki ote Reo (Māori Language Week) 2021, running from 13-19 September, EP will feature three FREE online competitions:

Whakataetae Reo Māori for Schools: from 9.00am Monday 13 September, closing at 4.00pm on Wednesday 15 September.

Whakataetae Reo Māori for Professionals: from 9.00am Wednesday 15 September until 4.00pm, Friday 17 September.

Whakataetae Reo Māori for Everyone: 9.00am Wednesday 15 September until 4.00pm Friday 17 September.

EP’s CEO Alex Burke said that it was vitally important to develop and further promote cultural diversity and enhance the deep rich traditions in New Zealand of its Māori people.

“The reason why we run these competitions, and why we are now running three whakataetae, is to do our part to support the revitalisation and normalisation of Te Reo Māori – the Māori Language – across all areas of the community in New Zealand,” he said.

“Education Perfect is committed to this very important endeavour, and we believe we have a powerful vehicle to assist our government in its goal to have over one million Kiwis speaking basic Te Reo Māori by 2040.

Te Rau Winterburn, Head of Kaupapa Māori at Education Perfect also added that “EP is proud of our Kiwi heritage, which includes authentically embedding Tikanga Māori – Māori practices – and the guiding principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi – the Treaty of Waitangi – within the culture of our organisation and all that we do.”

Registrations are now open for your school, company or family to participate in our country’s most important conversation.
