An expert consenting panel has approved the addition of 24 dwellings to an existing papakāinga development in Kaitaia.
The 24 houses are ex-Kāinga Ora stock that are being saved from demolition and relocated from Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland for re-use. The project also involves earthwork and land-use based consents.
Papakāinga translates as “original home, home base, village, communal Māori land”. The Kaitaia development is one of several papakāinga projects listed in the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act 2020.
The decision comes 85 working days after the application was lodged with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
The EPA is not involved in the decision-making – we provide advice and administrative support for the Panel Convener, Judge Newhook, and the expert consenting panels he appoints.
