Award-winning haka dance theatre company, Hawaiki TŪ evolves their evocative and revered work Taurite and brings it to the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, Aotea Centre for four performances only.
Developed in partnership with Auckland Live, Taurite wowed audiences in 2020 at Auckland Live Fringe Town, where it scooped top awards including ‘Pick of the Fringe’, ‘Best Dance’ and Auckland Arts Festival’s ‘Best of the Fringe’.
Later that year an innovative live-streamed performance from the Auckland Town Hall attracted viewers from around the globe.
A powerful, beautiful and spiritual performance Taurite embodies the pursuit of balance and duality.
Transporting the senses through its vital and ritualistic performance invoking taonga tuku iho (treasures of traditional heritage), Taurite is steeped in ancestral roots, the mana of regeneration and ihirangaranga (vibrations felt in waiata and performance expression). This is a celebration of indigenous physical expressions of kapa haka and Māori dance.
Led by kaitiaki/artistic director Kura Te Ua (Taurite, Autaia, Te Waka Huia), Hawaiki TŪ seamlessly fuses Māori performance theatre with contemporary dance, bringing into the work a stellar line-up of New Zealand’s finest matanga (creative experts) including Rereata Makiha (Maramataka Māori), Neil Ieremia (Artistic Director Black Grace), Eds Eramiha (Vegas, Hawaiki TŪ). Paddy Free (Pitch Black), Louise Potiki Bryant (Atamira Dance Company) and Te Kohe Tuhaka (Deadlands).
Taurite is a tour-de-force, unique to Aotearoa New Zealand and our creative spirit.
