Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists in the Wellington region to take extra care on the roads over the next couple of days due to challenging weather conditions.

MetService is warning of snowfall on the Remutaka Hill road (State Highway 2), which is expected later today until Monday evening.

Strong winds and heavy rain are also expected in Wellington over this period.

Regional Maintenance and Operations Manager Mark Owen says Waka Kotahi is monitoring the situation closely.

“Crews are on standby ready to implement any necessary road closures, should the weather get too dangerous for motorists.

“We encourage motorists to check the forecast and the Waka Kotahi social media pages or Journey Planner webpage before heading out.

“We’ll be providing updates on our Facebook, Twitter, and Journey Planner (links at bottom of page) if we do need to close any roads or put temporary traffic management in place for the safety of motorists.

“If people do need to travel, we’re urging them to take extra care on the roads. Keep speeds down, maintain a safe following distance and stay alert,” Mr Owen says.
