UPDATE: SH46 Tongariro to Rangipo, which was closed due to downed powerlines, is now open.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists to take extra care on roads in the central North Island today due to challenging weather conditions.

Several of the state highways in the region were closed due to snow earlier today, and while some roads have since been reopened, Waka Kotahi continues to urge motorists to drive to the winter weather conditions.

The following roads are currently closed:

  • SH46 Tongariro to Rangipo – downed powerlines
  • Napier Taihape Road (managed by Hastings District Council)

The following roads are open, with caution:

  • SH1 Waiouru to Rangipo  (Desert Road)
  • SH4 Tohunga Junction (Ohakune) to National Park
  • SH5 Napier to Taupō
  • SH47 Rangipo to National Park
  • SH49 Tohunga Junction (Ohakune) to Waiouru

National Journey Manager Helen Harris says Waka Kotahi continues to keep a close eye on the situation.

“Things may change quickly so people should check the Waka Kotahi Facebook, Twitter and Journey Planner webpages (see links at bottom of page) for the latest weather and road conditions before travelling. We’ll be providing updates if and when the situation changes.

“While some roads are open, the weather conditions remain challenging so if people do need to travel, we’re urging them to please keep speeds down, maintain a safe following distance and stay alert.”

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
