Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding motorists to plan for delays of up to one hour if travelling on State Highway 3 over Mt Messenger from Monday (9 August) until Friday (13 August) next week.
Road resurfacing and drainage works will be carried out from 8.30am-5.00pm on these days. This follows emergency surfacing work undertaken on Friday 16 July.
It will be a large site with a variety of works going on at any given time. For the safety of road users and our workers, road closures are required. Traffic will be stopped for up to an hour at the base on either side of Mt Messenger for one hour at a time in order to allow crews to undertake the work, with traffic released regularly to clear queues.
Indicative timings for road closures are as below:
Time | Road status |
8.30-9.30am | Closed |
9.30-10.00am | Open |
10.00-11.00am | Closed |
11.00-11.30am | Open |
11.30-12.30pm | Closed |
12.30-1.00pm | Open |
1.00-2.00pm | Closed |
2.00-2.30pm | Open |
2.30-3.30pm | Closed |
3.30-4.00pm | Open |
4.00-5.00pm | Closed |
5.00pm onward | Open |
All traffic will be cleared every hour; no vehicles will queue for more than one closure period.
With cold weather forecast for much of the country on Monday and a chance of severe gales for Taranaki, the start of this work may need to be postponed and may require more days than planned.
The road will be opened for emergency services vehicles.
Waka Kotahi appreciates that these delays may be frustrating for road users, and we thank people for their patience while we undertake this important work.
Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
