Massey University has identified a cryptomining attempt on one of its computers. Staff and students are being asked to change their passwords as a precaution.
This has been isolated and Massey’s core systems are not affected.
We have no evidence of other malacious or unexpected behaviour on our systems, but in accordance with best practice we are asking all students and staff to reset their passwords as soon as possible.
The attempt was identified on Friday and responded to immediately.
Cryptomining involves an attempt by a third-party-to harness the computing power of another organisation in mining for a crypto currency. It is not directed at individuals’ personal data.
The request to change passwords is a precautionary move as we always have monitoring in place.
The university has engaged an external specialist incident response team to assist in managing this attempt.
We appreciate all students and staff acting quickly on this.
