Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising that The Esplanade will be closed at the intersection with State Highway 35/Wainui Road next to Gladstone Road Bridge, from Saturday 5 June while work is underway to formalise the removal of the right-hand turn onto the state highway.
The ability to turn right was removed when construction began on the Gladstone Road Bridge walking and cycling path, and will be made permanent with the construction of a new island at The Esplanade and SH35/Wainui Road intersection.
Alongside construction of the new island, minor pavement improvements will be made to the surrounding footpath and two manhole lids will be upgraded.
While this work is underway, footpaths within the construction site will be closed, however crews will be onsite to guide pedestrians through.
Cycle lanes will also be closed so cyclists will need to use an alternative route, such as the Gladstone Road Bridge shared path or the path under the bridge, or merge into traffic on SH35/Wainui Road.
The timing of the work has been planned to coincide with Eastland Port being closed for ten days, which will mean fewer vehicles on the road and therefore a reduced impact to traffic.
The work is expected to take six days, with completion scheduled for Friday 11 June. Waka Kotahi advises motorists to plan ahead for their journeys during this time.
