The trial pop-up cycleway on Captain Scott Road leading to Glen Eden town centre will soon be underway.
The project is a live trial aimed at linking the current Greenway that terminates at Savoy Road and the surrounding neighbourhoods with the town, schools, and train station providing a safer route to walk and cycle.
It followed a community co-design process with local residents and businesses and will be in operation for around a year.
Installation of the trial cycleway along Captain Scott Road will take around two days and is expected to be installed in late May.
Safer and inviting
“The Glen Eden Streets for People project is aiming to make it safer and more inviting for people to cycle in Glen Eden,” says Waitākere Ranges Local Board Chair Saffron Toms.
“It is an important aspect of the Climate Emergency Response and the trial will use low-cost, low-risk, temporary installations that allows the community to try the design out and provide invaluable feedback.
“It will allow our deliverers, Auckland Transport, to test and quickly address any issues that may arise.
“The Waitākere Ranges Greenways Plan aspires to make Glen Eden better connected and this trial will be a great way to assess how well something like this will work.”
Monitoring
The trial will be monitored and evaluated using “success factors” developed with input from the codesign workshop with the community that was held in December 2020.
Key measures include whether there’s an increase in cycling, perceptions of safety, and parking impacts.
Board member Mark Allen says that the project will help provide insight into the appetite for a cycleway in the area.
“One of the great things about this is that it is a trial and we can get feedback from users to help us understand if this is something that the community wants.”
