Work to deliver a safer and more people-friendly Hurstmere Road has resumed this week following a construction hiatus over the busy summer period.

Four stages of work are being completed by Auckland Council between now and late 2021 to continue the upgrade of underground utilities, construction of raingardens and parking bays, reconstructing footpath surfaces and installing new street lighting and furniture.

When complete, Hurstmere Road in Takapuna will boast a more pedestrian and cycle-friendly environment with native plantings, bike racks and more seating to provide people with places to sit and linger. New raingardens will improve the water health of nearby Takapuna Beach by filtering the stormwater and removing pollutants before it enters the sea.

Councillor Richard Hills is pleased to see the work recommence and says that improvements completed during 2020 in sections of the street have been well received by the community.

“It’s fantastic to see this much-needed work start again. It’s a significant investment in our community, that not only upgrades the failing roadway, replaces the water supply main but will also provide stormwater infrastructure that will help clean up the water running onto Takapuna Beach.

“Importantly, the new one-way road layout and cycling lane will provide a safer environment for all users of the road including pedestrians and cyclists.

“I’ve had a lot of really positive feedback about the first stages of the project and I know our local businesses and residents are keen to see the remainder of the street upgraded as soon as possible.”

The work is being delivered in stages to reduce business disruption and ensure pedestrian access to shops and other businesses is always available. The planting of native trees and plants in all remaining stages will be completed towards the end of the project to align with the planting season.

Hurstmere Road will remain open to traffic during the construction.
