Hundreds of people came out to celebrate the opening of the newest ‘destination’ playground in West Auckland recently, following the completion of the Kopupaka Playground at Westgate.
The playground has been developed to serve the growing community in Westgate and incorporates several unique features.
History
With a nod to the site’s history as a strawberry field, the playground includes a custom-designed feature play tower that represents orchard crates.
There are junior and senior play areas with three slides and equipment to swing, spin, balance and climb as well as a flying fox, sandpit area and water play feature.
Looped paths around the playground also serve as a bike and scooter track, while there are two kick-a-ball areas, a picnic and BBQ area, an adult fitness hub and accessible car parking improvements at the site entrance.
Growth
Waitākere Ward Councillor Shane Henderson says that the playground is located in an area of significant growth.
“Westgate is an area that has seen significant growth over the last few years and is projected to see a continued growth in population which requires investment in services and facilities.
“The Kopupaka playground is one such development that provides families and communities with a facility to visit and enjoy that is right on the doorstep.
“It’s a fantastic example of play provision for the new metropolitan centres in Auckland, which are a vital component of Auckland Council’s strategy for addressing predicted population growth.”
Proud
Brenda Brady, Henderson-Massey Local Board Deputy Chair says the board is proud of the playground.
“The board is delighted with this magnificent playground that will cater for the many families that are making the area their home.
“In addition to the top-quality play facilities, the design connects the playground with the history of the site as a strawberry field which is a wonderful touch.
“So many people came here to celebrate the opening because it is simply outstanding, another incredible playground for the people of Henderson-Massey to enjoy and is, without doubt, one of the best playgrounds in all of Auckland.”
