People of Te Kaha are taking to the streets on nearly one kilometre of new footpaths in Schoolhouse Bay and between Te Kaha Hotel Road and the cemetery.

The footpaths, completed earlier this month, were funded through the Provincial Growth Fund, with additional contributions from Ōpōtiki District Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

Ōpōtiki District Council Project Manager Marty Schulz says as the footpath runs largely alongside State Highway 35, the project required a close working relationship between Council and Waka Kotahi.

“Waka Kotahi has gone the extra mile by securing additional funding from its walking and cycling fund to allow us to complete the footpath work.

“The safety improvements have made it much easier and safer for walkers along this stretch of road.”

The new footpaths have resulted in the formation of a walking group that meets on Thursdays.

Waka Kotahi Bay of Plenty System Manager Rob Campbell says it’s fantastic to hear the footpaths have been well received.

“Waka Kotahi promotes healthy journeys as an important aspect of safe journeys. Reducing travel by car and encouraging the uptake of walking and cycling helps improve air quality, reduce noise pollution, increase physical activity, and reduce carbon emissions.

“It’s been great working with Ōpōtiki District Council to make walking a safer and more attractive travel choice for the people of Te Kaha.”
