Franklin Local Board chair Andy Baker says the changes will make it safer to walk around the town, create outdoor dining spaces, and see the market move to the square.

“Market operators are excited by the move, which will bring more people into the town.

“The concepts were shaped at sessions where local people, businesses and youth told us about what they wanted to see in town. There were representatives from local groups, the markets and Franklin Arts Centre, and we also had drop-in sessions, using the feedback to informing what is happening.”

The Pukekohe Streets for People project is led by Panuku and Auckland Transport with funding from Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency). It is designed to create more people-friendly spaces and make it easier to transition streets to usable areas, and includes:

  • King Street – one-way eastward from Hall Street creating safe pedestrian space and better crossing points, outdoor dining, improved traffic flow while enhancing the town centre, and space for local businesses
  • Devon Lane – one-way creating safer walking space and road safety, opportunities for murals, and easier access from Farmers’ car park to the

Franklin Local Board Board member Amanda Kinzett says the co-design by trial approach gives the community a greater say in redesigning their own neighbourhoods because ideas can be tested, with tweaks made to find what works best.

“It is a great way to try things out and get public feedback to inform future decisions.”

King Street work, expected to take a week, starts on 20 April, with work done during the night, while Devon Lane work starts a week later, the work also done at night.

Businesses have all been informed and signs have also been added around the town.

Feedback will be accepted throughout the trial through to mid-June.
