New data shows that New Zealanders spent more over summer vs last summer, and the number of Kiwis planning a domestic holiday this year has remained steady.

“The industry are extremely grateful for the support from New Zealanders with the new spend data suggesting that Kiwis explored further from the sun lounger and backyard cricket on a holiday to the family bach,” says Tourism New Zealand interim Chief Executive René de Monchy.

Topline results:

Domestic tourism spend during summer break

  • Domestic spend grew 21% to $855 million on tourism 23 Dec 2020 to 10 Jan 2021, according to PayMark data.
  • Most regions saw increase in domestic spend against 2019/20.
  • Spend in December was up 15% in total, and January there was 24% growth against Jan 2020.
  • Visitation was flatter, indicating people didn’t necessarily go somewhere new over the Christmas break, but they likely did something new in a favourite holiday spot.

Domestic Travel View Report February 2021

  • More than half of Kiwis have visited a new place in the last year, and 23% have tried a new holiday activity.
  • 70% of Kiwis still intend to travel this year, and a good portion of Kiwis (59%) will still spend all or most of what they would have set aside for an overseas holiday.
