Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises there is a temporary lane closure in place on State Highway 45 between Omata and Oakura (near the Tapuwae Stream).
On Friday afternoon, contractors discovered a void (or cavity) beneath the New Plymouth bound lane of SH45. Testing over the weekend has shown that the void is approximately one metre beneath the surface but is an unknown depth.
To ensure the safety of everyone using the road, we have closed one lane until a repair can be undertaken. The Oakura bound lane has also been tested. It is on solid material and is safe for the public.
Engineers will be undertaking ground penetrating radar and drilling underneath the road over the next two days, weather permitting, to get an understanding of the type and size of the cavity before confirming a solution.
Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience while this testing is undertaken.
