Redesign of the quarterly employment survey

This paper describes the changes we’ve made to the quarterly employment survey (QES). Results of these changes will be reflected in the next QES results to be published in Labour market statistics: March 2021 quarter on 5 May 2021.
Summary and objectives of the redesign
- Update and refresh the sample design and methodology to improve the accuracy of published series.
- Simplify the requirements for respondents and thereby reduce respondent burden.
- Introduce a consistent selection methodology and processing system that allows for better comparability with other Stats NZ business data outputs.
- Update processing system design to allow for future changes that can make greater use of administrative data sources from Inland Revenue.
