Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising of upcoming maintenance works on State Highway 1 (SH1) Wellington Road, beginning Sunday 28 February.
The road and roadsides between Ruahine Street and the Kilbirnie Crescent traffic lights are being upgraded, which is expected to take around seven weeks, depending on weather.
Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says the work is part of essential maintenance to renew deteriorating road, kerb and footpath surfaces and ensure they remain safe for all road users.
“Wellington Road is the busiest road in Wellington city, with over 35,000 vehicles travelling this route per day. It’s inevitable there will be some wear and tear over time, so this maintenance work is essential to keeping the road safe for everyone who uses it.
“Underground services also need to be upgraded, so Waka Kotahi and the Wellington City Council are working with Wellington Water to get all our work done in one go.”
The layout of lanes will be altered to maintain one lane of traffic each way, with a 30km/h speed restriction in place day and night. Stop/go traffic control will be used for some night work operations.
Most of the work will be done during the day with the exception of night work scheduled for six nights. For this there will be a southbound detour in place.
“There will be some disruption to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians during the seven weeks of work so we’re advising everyone to expect delays, plan ahead and allow extra time,” Mr Owen says.
