Toa Faneva (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu ki Whaingaroa, Niue) will be welcomed on to Te Puna o Te Mātauranga Marae at the NorthTec Tai Tokerau Wānanga campus in Whangārei today, to take up the reins of Chief Executive of Northland’s largest tertiary education provider.

“Toa is an exceptional and empathetic rangatira. He has a track record of relationship building and managing transformational change.

“Those are attributes NorthTec needs to deliver on the Government-mandated reform of vocational education and training,” said Ripeka Evans, Chair of the NorthTec subsidiary board.

“I’m confident that with Toa at the helm, NorthTec will successfully face off key challenges around attracting and keeping ākonga-learners at the centre to learn with purpose, and  being able to bring together on-the-job, on campus, and online vocational education and training.

“Changing the way we have relationships with iwi, industry and employers will also be critical to our success and Toa’s highly skilled in that regard,” Ripeka Evans said.

Toa has extensive public and Māori development sector Chief Executive and senior leadership experience. He has been Chief Executive of Te Rūnanga o Whaingaroa for the last five years in Te Tai Tokerau. Prior to that he was Chief Executive of Ngā Ngaru Rautahi and the National Urban Māori Authority and was the National Manager of Funding and Contracting in the Ministry of Social Development.

Toa has held several roles concurrently, with former CE roles including the Iwi Lead for Te Kahu O Taonui, a partnership between the eleven Iwi in Te Tai Tokerau, Co-Chair of the Economic Recovery Leadership Group and the Interim Regional Skills Leadership Group.
