With a third of Auckland’s regional parks located in Rodney, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to exploring the outdoors this summer.
At 843 hectares, Ātiu Creek is one of the largest regional parks. Also a working farm, it’s located at Okahukura Peninsula, on the eastern side of Kaipara Harbour.
Gifted by Pierre and Jackie Chatelanat in 2006, more than a third of the park is covered by bush.
Here are some great things to do at the park:
- Walk to the Woolshed and learn more about the farm’s history
- Check out the spectacular views of the Ātiu estuary and Oruawharo River
- Find a picturesque spot for a picnic
- Head to the reservoir for a spot of tranquil bird watching which includes black swans, paradise shelducks (pūtangitangi), NZ dabchicks (weweia), and if you’re very lucky the rare brown teal (pāteke)
- Visit the Heretoka Pā site and enjoy the fantastic views along the way
- Head out to see the Oweka Tapu pou in its beautiful surrounds overlooking Solomon’s Bay
- Grab a brochure from the park noticeboard to take part in the orienteering course and find 40 markers spread throughout the park
- Explore the park on your mountain bike, choose from trails catering for beginners to experienced riders.
Horses are a great option at Ātiu Creek which is the only regional park where you can stay overnight with your horse.
