Professor Helen Nicholson.
Professor Helen Nicholson will take up the role of Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago in 2021.
Professor Nicholson is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, External Engagement, and is due to take up a new permanent role as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, in mid-January.
She has agreed to act as Vice-Chancellor when the incumbent, Professor Harlene Hayne, leaves and hold the position until a new Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
University of Otago Chancellor, Dr Royden Somerville QC, says the University is fortunate to have someone of the calibre of Professor Nicholson to step into the role.
“Professor Nicholson is very experienced, having previously held two Deputy Vice-Chancellor roles in her time with Otago.
“While the recruitment process continues, we know we will be in safe hands. This is particularly important as the University continues to manage the effects of the global pandemic.”
Professor Nicholson, who graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Bristol in 1979, has held a variety of leadership positions at Otago, including the Dean of the Otago School of Medical Sciences and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International).
She came to Otago from the University of Bristol in 2000 as a full professor.
Current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Harlene Hayne, is leaving Otago after almost a decade in the role. She has been appointed to the role of Vice-Chancellor at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia.
Dr Somerville says it is hoped a new Vice-Chancellor will be appointed and in the role by the end of 2021.
Current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Pat Cragg, will continue on in that role while Professor Nicholson is Acting Vice-Chancellor.
