Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Ngāti Hine have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise and strengthen their working relationship on road transport issues.

The MOU affirms the unique relationship that Ngāti Hine and its hapū have with the land, waterways and coast of the Rohe Tāngata o Ngāti Hine.

Waka Kotahi Director of Regional Relationships Steve Mutton says Waka Kotahi has an excellent working relationship with Ngati Hine and wants it to continue by working together to benefit from sharing their vision, knowledge and expertise.

“Keeping the state highway network safe, reliable and resilient is a top priority for Waka Kotahi and Ngati Hine.”

“Both parties recognise that they have a significant responsibility to each other in this respect, to work closely with each other to ensure clear lines of communication and appropriate participation in regard to projects and ongoing activities.”

Under the MoU, Waka Kotahi and Ngāti Hine will meet at least once a year to discuss state highway projects and maintenance within the Ngāti Hine area of interest and any other issues of concern relevant to the MoU.

The MoU was signed today in Kawakawa, where Waka Kotahi is currently upgrading the intersection of State Highway 1 and 11. The new roundabout will improve safety and access for all road users and provide better connectivity to services in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands and throughout the Far North.
