Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding truck drivers to take care on the roads and be mindful of noise.
“We have heard from residents in Gisborne that the noise of truck engines braking is impacting on their ability to sleep,” Senior Network and Journey Manager Helen Harris says.
“Everyone accepts that truck drivers have an important job and that engine brakes are a key safety feature for heavy vehicles, particularly in high-speed environments.
“We know that the impact of noise from the engine brakes on others are an unintended consequence, but we ask that drivers please be mindful and remind them not to use the brakes on flat roads unless absolutely necessary.
“There are signs along our state highway network reminding truck drivers of this.
“Of course there will be times when the use of engine brakes is necessary. We’re asking that truck drivers do their best to limit this where possible, and we also ask residents to understand that occasional use of engine brakes may be needed for safety reasons.”
