Upper Harbour Local Board has a free paddling guide promoting trips that can be made around the northern end of the Waitematā Harbour.
There’s a range of trip options, catering for beginners to more experienced paddlers. Trips range from 5km to 20km and are suited to stand-up paddle boarders and kayakers.

Stay safe on the water
The guide contains a safety checklist, tips on the best times to set out, and where to get important weather and tidal information.
Upper Harbour Local Board Chair Margaret Miles says it’s a great way to explore northern coastal areas.
“There is some gorgeous scenery to take in. It’s free, fun and great for keeping fit.”
“We strongly advise everyone to check weather and water conditions on Safeswim before heading out into our big blue backyard.”
The Safeswim website provides real-time information about water quality, beach conditions and hazards for over one hundred beaches across Auckland.
It also alerts water users to physical hazards, including rip currents, wind and wave conditions, as well as stinging jellyfish and sharks.
Familiarise yourself with the Safeswim website before getting on the water this summer.
