EIT’s School of Computing is excited to announce the winners at GovHack 2020, one of the world’s largest open data competitions.
Team Pinecone and Team IO (back row: Finnian Logan-Riley, Joe Van Der Zwet, Peter Ivory; front row: Arran Logan-Riley, James Hessell-Bowman, Mike Price, Tom Hartley, Samuel Wass, Rhiannon Edwards) took away five prizes at the national competition including the People’s Choice Award.

This year, 111 New Zealanders competed in the event. Mike Price, GovHack Director for NZ, acknowledged the logistical challenges that organisers and competitors had to face due to COVID-19. He also highlighted the vast spectrum of talents that were able to bring amazing ideas to fruition.
EIT Executive Dean Fred Koenders awarded the special Dean’s Awards to Stacey Moana and Peter Ivory for their commitment and excellence. For Head of School Sabine Hoffmann the event showed that there are no limits to what students can achieve when they work together and go the extra mile. “It was amazing to see what our teams created with open data in just 46 hours,” said EIT computing lecturer Tom Hartley who has brought the hackathon to EIT and supported the students throughout the event.
