Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising that construction is set to begin on the realignment of State Highway 2 (SH2) College Road to Silverstream Station.

The project, which is funded by the regional package of the NZ Upgrade Programme, includes a new southbound passing lane and median and side barriers.

Senior Project Manager Rob Partridge says the work is expected to get underway at the start of next month and, when complete, will make the road much safer for all motorists.

“We will be straightening and widening this 1.7 kilometre section of State Highway 2, which will improve the safety and efficiency of this key freight route between Hawke’s Bay, the Manawatū and Tairāwhiti,” Mr Partridge says.

“It will also improve the connection to Napier Port and support regional economic growth by reducing travel times, improving access and efficiencies for moving people and goods along this key route.

“Safety is Waka Kotahi’s top priority and this project is part of a wider investment we’re making across the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast to make the state highway network safer and more resilient for everyone.”

The project will be staged to minimise disruption. Most of the construction work will be to the side of the existing highway, which will reduce delays to road users. There will, however, be some disruption when undertaking the tie-ins to the existing highway.

Waka Kotahi will be hosting an informal information session from 3pm to 6pm on Monday 19 October at the Paper Mulberry Café, where people can find out more about the project.

At the session, Waka Kotahi will provide maps and artist impression renders to help people visualise what the improvements will look like. There will also be an opportunity for people to comment on speed and safety through Pukehou at the same time.
