International travel covers the number and characteristics of overseas visitors and New Zealand resident travellers (short-term movements) entering or leaving New Zealand.

Key facts

Overseas visitor arrivals were down by 210,000 to 3,500 in June 2020, compared with June 2019. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

  • Australia (down 99,300)
  • United States (down 19,500)
  • China (down 18,100)
  • United Kingdom (down 5,700)
  • Indonesia (down 5,500)
  • Singapore (down 4,900)
  • India (down 4,100)
  • Korea (down 3,900)
  • Japan (down 3,700)
  • Taiwan (down 3,100)

New Zealand residents returning

The number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip in June 2020 was down by 252,800 to 4,500, compared with June 2019. The biggest changes were in New Zealand residents arriving from:

  • Australia (down 99,600)
  • Fiji (down 21,300)
  • United States (down 18,200)
  • United Kingdom (down 13,300)
  • Cook Islands (down 10,600)
  • China (down 9,700)
  • Indonesia (down 7,400)
  • Samoa (down 5,100)
  • Thailand (down 3,800)
  • Japan (down 3,700).

Annual arrivals

In the June 2020 year compared with the June 2019 year, the number of visitor arrivals was 2.92 million, down by 970,700. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

  • Australia (down 342,600)
  • China (down 175,300)
  • United States (down 80,500)
  • United Kingdom (down 39,100).

In the June 2020 year, compared with the June 2019 year, the number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip was 2.32 million, down by 749,400. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

  • Australia (down 310,300)
  • Fiji (down 59,200)
  • United States (down 59,200)
  • China (down 42,900).
