NorthTec is hosting an environmental event in Whangārei town centre, to celebrate Conservation Week.

The event, called Conservation for Conservation’s Sake, will take place at Tai Tokerau Skills Centre +, Te Rua o Pukenga, on Saturday, 15 August, from 10am to 1pm.

It is a family-friendly event and is open to the whole community. The aim is to have fun, help educate visitors about conservation, and spread awareness of NorthTec’s environmental management programmes, which have provided a pipeline of graduates to work in conservation jobs in the region.

There will be interactive activities and participants can enter a Conservation Week prize draw, with the winner receiving a tablet.

The Department of Conservation and Tiakina Whangārei will have stalls to demonstrate their work in the area. Tiakina Whangārei is a community-led urban initiative which aims to protect and enhance the city’s native biodiversity.

Dai Morgan, NorthTec environmental management tutor, said: “We’d love to see members of the local community come along to learn more about conservation and where to go to enjoy Northland’s natural spaces and unique wildlife. If you’re interested in starting a career within the conservation industry, we can tell you all about the programmes we run at NorthTec that are getting our graduates into environmental positions.”

NorthTec offers both a Level 5 and a Level 6 Diploma in Environmental Management, and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Biodiversity Management). This is a Unitec degree taught and delivered in Tai Tokerau by NorthTec.

The Tai Tokerau Skills Centre +, Te Rua o Pukenga, is located at 38 Bank Street, on the corner of Bank Street and Cameron Street. Conservation Week 2020, which is run by the Department of Conservation, runs from 15 to 23 August.
