Summary

Scope

This code applies to activities associated with sealed sources such as fixed and portable nuclear gauges and logging tools containing sealed sources used for non-medical purposes including research and education. Nuclear gauges can be used for purposes such as level indication and density, concentration and thickness measurement. Logging tools are used for well logging. Activities can include the manufacture, possession, control, management, use, storage, import, export, sale, supply, and disposal of radioactive material and equipment.

Background

This code replaces two previous codes (CSP 15 and 19) that dealt separately with fixed industrial gauges and portable nuclear density meters.  The new code consolidates the previous two codes to provide regulatory guidance for all practices associated with sources within the scope of this code. Specific requirements for each type of equipment and training are set out as appendices.

Consultation process

In October 2019, the Ministry released a document for public consultation on the proposed wording of this code. The consultation period closed on 22 November 2019.
