Today, the US Army Corps of Engineers published its final Environmental Impact Statement for the Pebble Mine. In response, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Margaret Williams, managing director of WWF’s US Arctic program:

“The disappointing statement issued by the US Army Corps of Engineers demonstrates a disregard for the voices of the majority of Alaskans who oppose the mine, as well as ongoing concerns around the scientific data and the need to protect of one of our country’s most treasured natural wonders, Bristol Bay.

“Bristol Bay is an irreplaceable ecosystem that serves as one of the planet’s last salmon strongholds, home to iconic wildlife and critical to the livelihoods and cultures of thousands of Alaskans. All of this is under threat if Pebble Mine moves forward.

“Throughout this rushed and inadequate process, we have seen an avoidance of both the facts and meaningful public engagement. Given the stakes for Alaska’s communities, economy and environment, our leaders and elected officials need to step up to ensure a fair and informed decision-making process.”
