Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises State Highway 35 will be closed to all traffic this afternoon at the Waiokaha Bridge near Waihau Bay, so a tomo on the eastern abutment of the bridge can be dug out and back filled.

The bridge is currently down to one lane under Stop/Go traffic management.

The bridge will close to all traffic between 3.30pm and 5.30pm to allow enough room to work safely with the machinery required.

Bay of Plenty System Manager Rob Campbell says motorists should plan ahead and delay their journeys where possible.

“Following the weekend’s severe weather on the East Coast, there is traffic management and speed restrictions in place at various sites along SH35. At least seven other sites on the network are down to a single lane. The weather has caused multiple slips, potholes and cracks along the highway and the road remains slippery in some areas due to debris and slips still being cleared.”

Waka Kotahi thanks motorists for their patience.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
